Does Your Bathroom Need Warm White or Cool White Lighting?
When renovating your home or simply replacing the lighting around your home, you may overlook the colour temperature of the bulbs/LEDs and primarily think about the cost of the bulbs instead. You may even pick one temperature to match the rest of your home, but the truth is, the appearance and light output of a bulb can make or break the feel of each and every room in the house; especially the bathroom.
The bathroom is considered to be one of the most relaxing rooms in the house. This is the room where you will often be alone, ready to prepare for the day ahead of you or unwind after the day you have just encountered. Which is why it is important to set a relaxing ambience in your bathroom with the perfect furniture, accessories and lighting. So, what's the difference between warm and cool lighting?
Warm Lighting
Warm white lighting often has a yellow tint to the output, hence the name 'warm.' This lighting is often used in traditional kitchens, living spaces and bedrooms as it creates a soft, calming atmosphere whilst also providing you with enough lighting for tasks such as cooking, reading or getting dressed.
Warm white light ranges from 3,000 to 4,000 kelvins and is often used in floor lamps and pendant ceiling lights. You will also find that a lot of energy-efficient bulbs will appear warm white once activated as they don't use as much energy at 3,000 kelvins and will take longer to get to a daylight white output.
Cool Lighting
Cool white lighting has a white output with a small tint of blue depending on the amount of kelvins. This lighting is often used in modern bathrooms and kitchens where precise, task lighting such as cooking, cleaning, grooming and applying makeup is at a higher demand. This light is considered to be harsh in bedrooms and living spaces as it doesn't create a relaxing atmosphere and instead, creates direct light to highlight specific features of the room.
Cool white light ranges from 5,000 to 6,500 kelvins and is often used in spotlights, plinth lighting and LED strip lighting. When used correctly, you can add character to the room with beautiful white LED lighting, whether this is in plinth kits along the side of your bathtub, or under-cabinet strip lighting in kitchens to highlight the worktop.
In most households, you will find that the ensuite will have cool white lighting as this is more commonly used for morning routines including showering and shaving. The main bathroom is often going to have warm white lighting as this is where the family will bathe or relax during the evening and the soft light helps to set a relaxing mood.
